Exploring the Role of Vitreous Cortex Remnants in Surgical Failure of Rhegmatogenous Retinal Detachment Repair

This study validated the previous findings regarding the prevalence of unremoved vitreoschisis-induced vitreous cortex remnants (pVCR) in patients undergoing vitrectomy for rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD). The results showed that pVCR were detected in 36% of patients, and 83% of these cases had the remnants removed. The surgical failure rate was 6%, and half of the cases with retinal redetachment had initial PVR. Surgical failure was significantly associated with the presence of pVCR. The study confirms previous findings and suggests the need for further research to identify patients who would benefit from pVCR removal.
