Extracorporeal Photopheresis as a Possible Therapeutic Approach for Adults with Non-Responsive Severe COVID-19

A study assessed the viability and safety of extracorporeal photopheresis (ECP) for severe or critical COVID-19 patients unresponsive to antiviral and immunomodulatory treatments. Seven patients were enrolled, with 2 out of 7 succumbing to non-ECP-related causes. Survivors exhibited improved outcomes, including clearance of SARS-CoV-2 RNA, reduced cytokine levels, and T-cell regeneration. ECP could be a secure and viable alternative for unresponsive COVID-19 cases, warranting further research for optimal implementation.
