Factors associated with late gestational age of diagnosis or delayed referral of fetuses with major structural malformations

This study examined factors contributing to delayed diagnosis or referral of pregnant women with congenital fetal malformations in a South Indian tertiary care hospital. Of 107 patients, 75.2% were advised to undergo a mid-trimester scan, but 62.5% had undetected abnormalities. Factors contributing to delays included inadequate healthcare professional training, busy schedules, lack of awareness, and communication gaps. Psychosocial factors like denial, fear, and emotional distress also played a role. The study recommends addressing these issues to improve pregnancy management and support for affected parents.
