Factors associated with swallowing dysfunction in patients with head and neck cancer

This study aimed to investigate swallowing function in patients with head and neck cancer (HNC) from diagnosis up to 2 years after treatment. The study measured the 100 ml water swallow test before treatment and at various intervals after treatment. The analysis revealed that the number of swallows increased from baseline to 3 months after treatment and then decreased to baseline levels at 6 months after treatment. Age and treatment modality were found to be associated with the number of swallows, with older age and surgical treatment being factors associated with swallowing dysfunction over time. The study highlights the changing nature of swallowing function in HNC patients and identifies important factors influencing it.
