Factors Contributing to Poor Glycaemic Control Among Type 2 Diabetes Patients in Kinshasa

A recent study conducted in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, reveals a significant problem with glycaemic control among patients with type 2 diabetes. Poor glycaemic control, defined as HbA1c levels of ≥7%, was found in about two-thirds of the 620 participants. Factors associated with this poor control included being on insulin monotherapy and having a diabetes treatment duration of seven years or more. Surprisingly, uncontrolled blood pressure and being overweight were found to have a protective effect against poor glycaemic control, highlighting the unique characteristics of diabetes in sub-Saharan Africa. This research aims to inform interventions to improve glycaemic control in the region.
