Fatty pancreas associated with subsequent diabetes mellitus development

A 10-year prospective cohort study in Hong Kong has found that fatty pancreas was independently associated with subsequent development of diabetes mellitus (DM). Of 631 individuals (mean age 48 ± 11 years), 93 (14.7%) had fatty pancreas (as quantified using fat–water MRI). The fatty pancreas group had a significantly higher incidence of DM, hypertension and dyslipidaemia during long-term follow-up; those with both fatty liver and fatty pancreas had the highest DM incidence. Multivariate analysis revealed that fatty pancreas, but not hypertension or dyslipidaemia, was independently associated with DM.
