FDA Approves Izervay for Geographic Atrophy Tied to Age-Related Macular Degeneration

The FDA has approved Izervay (avacincaptad pegol intravitreal solution) for treating geographic atrophy secondary to age-related macular degeneration. Two phase 3 trials showed a significant reduction in geographic atrophy growth with Izervay compared to a sham treatment, with up to 35% reduction in the first year. Izervay, a C5 inhibitor, targets retinal cell death and complements the system, offering hope for patients. Approval was given to Iveric Bio, an Astellas Pharma company. This marks a positive development for the retina community and geographic atrophy sufferers.
