The fight against rare cancers is challenging due to missed or wrong diagnoses, lack of information, diagnostic tools, funding, and too few samples. However, studying well-defined, rare cancers has led to advances in cancer biology. Fibrolamellar hepatocellular carcinoma (FLC) is a rare and lethal liver cancer mainly affecting adolescents and young adults. It is difficult to diagnose, and little is known about its genetic inheritance or somatic mutation. Through a personal journey of a decade of work, answers to these questions and a roadmap of steps and missteps in fighting this rare cancer have been revealed.
