The study aimed to investigate whether a nanoporous TiO2-coating on titanium alloy substrates could increase cell adhesion of human gingival fibroblasts (HGF) and improve gingival attachment to dental implants. Three different titanium groups were used: hydrothermally produced TiO2-coating (HT), novel TiO2-coating made in sol (SOL), and noncoated control group. Primary HGF cells were cultivated on titanium discs for 2 and 24 hours, and cell spreading and adhesion protein signals were measured. The expression of adhesion proteins vinculin, paxillin, and focal adhesion kinase (FAK) were measured after 3 days of cultivation. Results showed that both coated discs induced higher protein levels of adhesion proteins compared to noncoated discs, and cell spreading was significantly larger on SOL discs. The TiO2-coatings can potentially improve gingival attachment to titanium implant surfaces.
