This study explores how menopause contributes to atrial fibrosis (AF). Analysis of a cohort of women with AF found a positive correlation between low-voltage area (LVA) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) levels. Experiments with ovariectomized (OVX) mice revealed that menopause increased AF incidence and atrial fibrosis, effects mitigated by targeting FSH receptors. FSH stimulation in male mice and OVX in angiotensin II-induced models also showed increased fibrosis and AF. RNA sequencing identified oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction as underlying mechanisms.
