Chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection affects around 296 million people worldwide and is a major cause of cirrhosis and liver cancer. HBV-related cirrhosis caused an estimated 331,000 deaths in 2019, and deaths from HBV-related liver cancer are increasing. HBV is underdiagnosed, and prevention and treatment measures are underutilized, particularly in low-income countries. Despite the World Health Organization's goal to eliminate viral hepatitis by 2030, deaths from HBV are projected to increase if no action is taken. This review discusses the current state of HBV and proposes future directions to address gaps in care.
