Functional Interaction of the Cruciate Ligaments, Posteromedial and Posterolateral Capsule, Oblique Popliteal Ligament, and Other Structures in Preventing Abnormal Knee Hyperextension

The study aimed to determine which ligaments and capsular structures in the knee joint provide resistance to prevent abnormal knee hyperextension. The hypothesis was that the posteromedial and posterolateral capsular structures would provide the major resistance. The results showed that the combined posterior capsular structures provided 54.7% of the resisting moment, while the anterior and posterior cruciate ligaments provided 25.3%. The posteromedial and posterolateral capsular structures were indeed found to be the major resistance to knee hyperextension. The study concluded that the diagnosis of abnormal knee hyperextension involves multiple ligaments and soft tissue structures without one primary restraint.
