
This study explores the acid resistance mechanisms of Fusobacterium nucleatum, a bacterium that translocates from the oral cavity to the intestine. The presence of erucic acid (C22:1(n9)) in the cell membrane of F. nucleatum enhances its survival in acidic environments like the stomach. The synthesis of this fatty acid is regulated by the FnFabM gene, and its inhibition reduces the bacterium's ability to colonize the intestine, offering insights into the oral-gut axis and its impact on health.
