In a groundbreaking development, the 'Geneva patient' has achieved long-term HIV remission without receiving a virus-blocking gene mutation transplant like in previous cases. Although not considered 'cured', doctors have not detected the virus in his system 20 months after stopping antiretroviral treatment. Five others were declared cured after bone marrow transplants with CCR5 gene mutations. The Geneva patient's transplant lacked this mutation, leaving the virus capable of entering cells. The study cautioned that HIV could still return but remained optimistic. While the procedure isn't feasible for most patients, the case offers hope for alternative remission methods.
