GER Increases Risk of CRS and CR, Study Shows

A bidirectional Mendelian randomization analysis revealed a causal relationship between gastroesophageal reflux (GER) and an increased risk of chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) and chronic rhinitis (CR). Using genome-wide association study (GWAS) data, researchers applied the inverse variance weighted (IVW) method with genetic loci as instrumental variables. Findings showed that GER significantly raised the risk of CRS (OR = 1.3795, 95% CI = 1.188–1.603) and CR (OR = 1.3941, 95% CI = 1.1671–1.6652), with p-values < 0.05. The study detected no notable pleiotropy, heterogeneity, or bias in instrumental variables, and reverse-direction analysis showed no association. These results indicate that managing GER may help mitigate CRS and CR risks in clinical settings, particularly for refractory cases.
