This study investigated the relationship between gestational age, socio-demographic characteristics, and school performance at the age of 12 among children in regular primary education. The results showed that school performance increased with gestational age up to 40 weeks across all socio-demographic groups. Children born at 25 weeks had lower school performance scores than those born at 40 weeks. Low maternal education, young or old maternal age, non-European origin, being born third or later, and low socio-economic status was associated with lower school performance. Preterm children from socially or economically disadvantaged backgrounds were more vulnerable to the negative impact of preterm birth on school performance.
