Gestational age at birth and type 1 diabetes in childhood and young adulthood: a nationwide register study

This study examined the risk of type 1 diabetes across various gestational ages using data from national registers in Finland, Norway, and Sweden. Among 5,501,276 individuals born between 1987 and 2016, those born late preterm (34-36 weeks) and early term (37-38 weeks) had an increased risk of type 1 diabetes compared to full-term births. Conversely, individuals born extremely preterm (23-27 weeks) or very preterm (28-31 weeks) had a decreased risk. These findings were consistent across all three countries.
