The review discusses the dynamic temporal trends of gastric cancer worldwide, with some regions and demographic groups experiencing declines in incidence and mortality rates while others remain stable or even increasing. The review identifies two main anatomical subtypes of gastric cancer, non-cardia and cardia, each with different risk factors. It also highlights the importance of Helicobacter pylori infection as a significant aetiological factor for non-cardia gastric cancer and the recent emergence of studies examining the impact of H. pylori eradication on gastric cancer risk. The review provides clinical and public health inferences based on the available evidence and addresses the gaps in knowledge and public health practice that need to be addressed to reduce the gastric cancer burden worldwide.
