Global Insights: Laryngeal Transplantation Across Three Continents in Eleven Cases

Laryngeal transplantation offers potential relief for patients with complete laryngeal function loss, impacting breathing, swallowing, and voice. A case series of 11 patients undergoing total laryngeal transplantation from 1998 to 2018 revealed mixed outcomes: 27% mortality, graft explants due to chronic rejection, and varying degrees of functional recovery in voice (62.5%) and decannulation (50%). Swallowing initially posed challenges but improved substantially over time. The procedure shows promise for enhancing the quality of life in carefully selected patients with severe laryngeal disorders, yet technical and pharmacological advancements are needed for broader application.
