In 2019, there were 236,000 deaths and 2.51 million incident cases, with the greatest burden in children under 5. Mortality rates dropped from 7.5 to 3.3 per 100,000 population from 1990 to 2019. Streptococcus pneumoniae was the leading cause of all-age meningitis deaths (18.1%), followed by Neisseria meningitidis (13.6%) and Klebsiella pneumoniae (12.2%). Haemophilus influenzae deaths in children under 5 reduced significantly (76.5%) from 1990.
