
A new study examined the effects of glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs) on stroke and transient ischemic attacks (TIA) in individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). The study analyzed data from 28 randomized controlled trials involving 74,148 T2DM patients. The results showed that the use of GLP-1RAs was associated with a reduced risk of adverse cerebrovascular outcomes compared to placebo or active comparators. GLP-1RA treatment was specifically linked to a decreased risk of nonfatal ischemic stroke and a composite of ischemic stroke and TIA. Longer-acting formulations, like dulaglutide and subcutaneous/oral semaglutide, showed better results. This study highlights the potential benefits of GLP-1RAs in reducing ischemic cerebrovascular events in T2DM patients.
