GLP-1 Receptor Agonists vs. SGLT2 Inhibitors: Impact on Diabetic Retinopathy Progression

A study assessed the effects of GLP-1 receptor agonists (GLP1RA) versus SGLT2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) on diabetic retinopathy (DR) progression. In 97,413 patients with diabetes, those with existing DR treated with GLP1RA showed higher risk of DR progression compared to those on SGLT2i, primarily due to increased tractional retinal detachment. For patients without baseline DR, ocular outcomes were similar between both treatments. These findings suggest GLP1RA may increase DR risk in patients with pre-existing conditions.
