
This study analysed the glycaemic patterns of professional athletes with type 1 diabetes throughout a competitive season. Continuous glucose monitoring data of 12 professional male cyclists were examined during exercise, recovery, and sleep on days with competitive exercise (CE) and non-competitive exercise (NCE). The results showed that overall glycaemia was generally within targets, with time in range (3.9-10 mmol/L) at 70.0% and time in hypoglycaemia (<3.9 mmol/L) at 6.4%. However, on CE days, there was a higher incidence of hyperglycaemia (time in hyperglycaemia >10 mmol/L) than on NCE days. The study suggests addressing hyperglycaemia during competitions and nocturnal hypoglycaemia after NCE for further improvement in glycaemic control for endurance athletes with type 1 diabetes.
