The study investigated the role of innate-like T-cells in the dysregulated interleukin (IL)-23/IL-17 responses in the gut-joint axis in patients with non-radiographic axial spondyloarthritis (nr-axSpA) and gut inflammation. Ileal and colonic samples were collected from nr-axSpA patients with and without gut inflammation, as well as from healthy controls. The presence of gut inflammation was assessed, and the immune cells were analyzed using flow cytometry. The results showed that patients with gut inflammation had increased levels of γδ-hi T-cells in the gut and blood, and these cells were associated with disease activity. The study suggests that innate-like T-cells are involved in intestinal inflammation and disease activity in nr-axSpA.
