Gut microbiome immaturity and childhood acute lymphoblastic leukaemia

Recent research suggests that children diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) may have a delayed development of the gut microbiome compared to healthy children. This delay could be linked to certain early-life factors associated with an increased risk of childhood ALL, such as being born via caesarean section, lack of breastfeeding, and limited social contacts. The consistent absence of bacteria that produce short-chain fatty acids in children with ALL could disrupt immune responses and potentially raise the chances of preleukaemic clones transforming due to common infections. These findings support the idea that an early-life microbiome deficit might contribute to childhood ALL, highlighting the potential for microbiome-targeted interventions to reduce risk in the future.
