This review article focuses on the gut-liver axis, which refers to the interactions between the gut, liver, microbiome, diet, and other environmental factors. The article discusses the barriers that exist in the enterohepatic tissues to prevent gut-derived microorganisms, microbial stimuli, and dietary constituents from entering the liver. It also examines the development of these barriers and their function in the adult host. The article describes how microbial and dietary metabolites interact with the intestinal and vascular endothelium, the immune system, and host soluble factors to maintain a healthy balance in the gut and liver. Finally, the article discusses how this balance is disrupted in gut and liver diseases and explores existing therapeutics and emerging treatment approaches.
