This retrospective study evaluated the correlation of the periventricular echogenic halo (halo sign) with histopathological findings and its association with other brain imaging abnormalities in fetuses with cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection. The study analyzed 35 CMV-infected fetuses diagnosed with severe CMV infection based on ultrasound findings and subsequent termination of pregnancy or fetal demise. The halo sign was detected in 91% of the fetuses, with six cases showing it as an isolated finding. The isolated halo sign was associated with mild ventriculitis, while non-isolated halo sign cases exhibited more severe brain lesions. The study suggests detailed neurosonographic and MRI follow-up for accurate prognosis in CMV-infected fetuses.
