Health Consequences of Thymus Removal in Adults

Health Consequences of Thymus Removal in Adults

The study compared 1420 thymectomy patients with 6021 matched controls who had undergone cardiothoracic surgery without thymectomy. Results demonstrated a significant increase in all-cause mortality and cancer risk in the thymectomy group at 5 years after surgery. Additionally, excluding patients with preoperative infection, cancer, or autoimmune disease showed an elevated risk of autoimmune disease. Further investigations indicate reduced T-cell production and higher proinflammatory cytokine levels in thymectomy patients.
