Healthcare Breakthrough: Phone and Text Support Proves Effective in Reducing Children's BMI

The study aimed to determine the effectiveness of a telephone and SMS support intervention for mothers in reducing their children's BMI and obesity risk behaviors. The randomized controlled trial involved 662 women with 2-year-old children in Sydney, Australia. The mothers in the intervention group received telephone support sessions, SMS messages, and mailed booklets, while the control group received usual care and mailed booklets on unrelated topics. The primary outcome was the child's BMI at 3 years of age, and secondary outcomes were dietary and activity behaviors. The results showed no significant difference in mean BMI between the groups, but children in the intervention group were more likely to meet the dietary and activity recommendations and less likely to eat in front of the TV than those in the control group. The intervention was also associated with a lower mean BMI in children from lower-income households.
