This study discusses the increased risk of heart failure (HF) in individuals with type 2 diabetes (T2DM) and pre-diabetes and the correlation between longer T2DM duration and greater HF risk. Insulin resistance is also more likely to be present in patients with HF. Despite standard preventive treatments for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD), HF remains a common complication and the most expensive complication of diabetes due to high hospitalization costs. Recent cardiovascular outcome studies (CVOT) have led to new therapies for HF patients, including SGLT-2 receptor blockers and metformin, while caution should be exercised when using certain diabetes drugs in patients with existing or high risk for HF.
