A study of 6947 cases in Japan found that heat stress, measured by WBGT, was associated with an increased risk of placental abruption on the day following exposure (lag 1). This association was stronger in individuals with hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) or small for gestational age (SGA) infants. The risk diminished in subsequent days, suggesting heat stress may advance placental abruption events.
