New research findings suggest that herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) can infect endodontic periapical lesions, according to a systematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies. The pooled prevalence of HSV-1 in periapical lesions was estimated to be between 3% and 11%. However, the presence of HSV-1 does not necessarily indicate a causative role in the development or progression of the disease. The study recommends conducting well-designed prospective cohort studies to further investigate this association.
