Excess visceral fat deep within the belly increases the risk of Alzheimer’s disease, according to research from the Radiological Society of North America. The study, analyzing brain MRIs and PET scans of 54 cognitively healthy individuals aged 40 to 60, reveals a link between visceral fat and brain changes associated with Alzheimer's. Those with more visceral fat showed higher levels of amyloid, a key Alzheimer's protein, and increased brain inflammation. The correlation was more evident in men, and the connection was found 15 years before Alzheimer's symptoms typically appear. The hope is that these findings could pave the way for targeted treatments.
