High-flow versus Venturi Mask Oxygen Therapy to Prevent Reintubation: A Matter of Time or Device?

High-flow versus Venturi Mask Oxygen Therapy to Prevent Reintubation: A Matter of Time or Device?

A study compared the use of Venturi masks and high-flow nasal oxygen (HFNO) in patients with acute respiratory failure. While they appreciate the study, they raise several points for clarification. The calculated the ROX index or monitored NT-proBNP concentrations, as these can be useful in predicting treatment efficacy and post-extubation respiratory distress. The study suggests that dyspnoea should be actively assessed in patients with acute respiratory failure. Finally, comparing comfort scores as HFNO therapy may be more comfortable than standard oxygen therapy in the post-extubation phase.
