High Frequency of Digital Vaginal Examinations Among Laboring Mothers in Arba Minch Town, Ethiopia Raises Concerns

A recent study conducted from May 3 to July 6, 2022, in Arba Minch town, southern Ethiopia, found that digital vaginal examinations (DVE) are frequently employed in public health facilities during labour. Out of 374 respondents, 61.5% underwent five or more DVE. Significant associations were identified between frequent DVE and factors such as primiparity, latent phase admission, labor augmentation, prolonged labor, intact membranes at admission, and vacuum delivery. The study suggests a need for healthcare provider training and monitoring to address the high frequency of DVE and its potential risks to maternal and neonatal health.
