A study of 12,713 patients with inflammatory arthritis (IA) revealed that approximately one-third reported feelings of loneliness. Loneliness was most prevalent among patients with axial spondylarthritis (axSpA) and was notably high in those with severe depression. The prevalence of loneliness was lowest in rheumatoid arthritis (31.6%) compared to psoriatic arthritis (36.0%) and axSpA (36.3%). There was a significant association between loneliness and increased disease activity, with higher rates of loneliness observed in patients experiencing high levels of pain, fatigue, and low physical function. These findings emphasize the impact of loneliness on IA patients and the need for targeted mental health interventions to address this issue.
