High Prevalence of Sarcopenia and Sarcopenic Obesity in Indian Diabetics

A study examined the prevalence and clinical factors associated with sarcopenia and sarcopenic obesity in 750 Indian adults aged 35-70 years, categorized into diabetic (n=250), nondiabetic (n=250), and obese nondiabetic (n=250) groups. Results showed sarcopenia affected 60% of diabetic, 28% of nondiabetic, and 38% of obese nondiabetic participants (p<0.001). Sarcopenic obesity prevalence was 40%, 11%, and 30%, respectively (p<0.001). Diabetes was linked to a 2.3-fold increased risk of sarcopenia, and a 2.4-fold increased risk of sarcopenic obesity after adjustments. Factors such as diabetes duration over 10 years, uncontrolled diabetes, age above 65, low physical activity, hypertension, and dyslipidemia are also elevated risks. The study highlights the need for early diabetes management and lifestyle interventions to preserve muscle health in this population.
