A study revealed that small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) is prevalent in 36.5% of critically ill patients in the ICU. The research used a noninvasive breath test to diagnose SIBO and found that its presence was linked to a higher incidence of ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) and prolonged ICU stays. However, all-cause in-hospital mortality rates were similar between patients with and without SIBO. The study emphasizes the significance of early diagnosis and effective treatment for SIBO in critically ill patients to mitigate complications like VAP and extended hospitalization.
