This study investigated the effectiveness of a novel psychosocial intervention, combining motivational interviewing and cognitive-behavioral therapy (MI-CBT), in treating motivational negative symptoms in individuals with schizophrenia. 79 participants with moderate to severe negative symptoms were randomly assigned to either the MI-CBT group or a mindfulness control group. The results showed that the MI-CBT group exhibited significant improvements in motivational negative symptoms during the 12-week treatment period, and these gains were maintained during the 12-week follow-up period. While improvements in community functioning and pupillometric markers of cognitive effort were not significant, the study suggests that MI-CBT can be a promising intervention for addressing negative symptoms in schizophrenia.
