A recent study conducted on pediatric patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) and diabetic nephropathy has revealed significant benefits of omega-3 fatty acid supplementation. In a six-month randomized-controlled trial involving 70 patients, those receiving oral omega-3 supplements (1g daily) exhibited notable improvements. The intervention group showed decreased levels of fasting blood glucose, HbA1c, triglycerides, total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, urinary albumin creatinine ratio (UACR), kidney injury molecule-1 (KIM-1), and carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT). Additionally, HDL-cholesterol increased significantly. These findings suggest that omega-3 supplementation can enhance glycemic control, manage dyslipidemia, and delay disease progression and atherosclerosis in pediatric T1DM patients with diabetic nephropathy.
