The study conducted a systematic review to identify articles that have evaluated the relationship between binocularly measured distance visual acuity and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in adults at a population level worldwide. Out of 780 articles, 12 were eligible for the review. The studies showed a trend between decreasing visual acuity and deteriorating HRQoL, particularly in dimensions related to physical health and capability. Mental dimensions were also affected, but the results were inconsistent. The impact of visual impairment on HRQoL was found to be equal or stronger compared with other major medical conditions. The study concludes that declining vision is associated with reduced functioning and isolation, which negatively impacts an individual's well-being. The global burden of vision loss emphasizes the need for prevention and treatment.
