Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy and Late Local Toxic Effects in Patients With Irradiated Breast Cancer

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is investigated for treating late toxic effects post-breast irradiation, but it lacks strong evidence. A pragmatic, hospital-based trial assessed HBOT's efficacy for late toxic effects in women after breast cancer radiotherapy. The study included 189 women with reported pain, edema, fibrosis, or movement restrictions 12+ months post-irradiation. 30-40 HBOT sessions were administered over 6-8 weeks. Primary outcome: pain at 6 months post-randomization. 125 women received HBOT; 61 formed the control group. While HBOT didn't significantly reduce pain, it decreased fibrosis. Notably, pain and fibrosis reduced in those who completed HBOT. Acceptance for HBOT was lower than expected. HBOT showed potential in managing fibrosis post-irradiation.
