Hyperferritinemia Predicts Poor Outcomes in Brain Disease

A study investigating acute necrotizing encephalopathy (ANE) explored the prognostic significance of hyperferritinemia in 29 patients. Results revealed that 69% of patients experienced poor neurological outcomes, with shock on admission and brainstem involvement significantly associated with adverse outcomes. Multivariate analysis identified ferritin, aspartate aminotransferase (AST), and ANE severity score (ANE-SS) as outcome predictors. A ferritin level exceeding 1823 ng/mL correlated with an eightfold increased risk of poor neurological outcome, suggesting ferritin's potential as a prognostic indicator in ANE. These findings underscore the importance of monitoring ferritin levels in ANE management.
