Hypoglycemia Responses Differ Between Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes

A study compared responses to hypoglycemia among individuals with type 1 diabetes, insulin-treated type 2 diabetes, and controls without diabetes. The study results found notable differences in counterregulatory hormone and symptom responses. Individuals with type 1 diabetes exhibited lower glucagon and adrenaline responses compared to those with type 2 diabetes and controls. Additionally, growth hormone levels were lower in type 2 diabetes at baseline and during hypoglycemia. Moreover, individuals with type 1 diabetes had overall lower symptom responses, particularly in neuroglycopenic symptoms. These findings shed light on the variations in physiological responses to hypoglycemia across different types of diabetes.
