New research reveals dire conditions for sexual and reproductive health services in Afghanistan following the transition of power. A survey conducted among doctors in May 2022 highlighted alarming findings. None of the respondents (0%) reported access to services for gender-based violence, while only a small percentage reported access to services after rape (3.4%), legal abortion (12.6%), antenatal care (13.3%), and labour care (20%). Preventable factors, such as untreated postpartum haemorrhage, lack of skilled providers, and malnutrition, were cited as leading causes of maternal mortality or near misses. The regime change was also associated with reduced access to labour care, contraceptives, and overall access for internally displaced persons. Urgent action is needed to address this crisis.
