The study evaluated the use of biophysical phenotyping of circulating immune cells as a clinical tool for the evaluation and risk stratification of patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc). This study identified a specific signature of biophysical properties of circulating immune cells in SSc patients, mainly driven by monocytes, which reflects SSc-specific monocyte activation. The biophysical properties of monocytes were associated with disease activity, the extent of skin or lung fibrosis, the severity of microvascular damage, and the risk of disease progression in SSc patients. The study concluded that the biophysical phenotyping of monocytes could serve as a tool for the evaluation and risk stratification of SSc patients.
