Imaging in gynecological disease: clinical and ultrasound characteristics of intramural pregnancy

This study aimed to describe the clinical and sonographic characteristics of intramural pregnancies, available management options, and treatment outcomes. The retrospective study identified 18 patients diagnosed with intramural pregnancy between 2008 and 2022. Vaginal bleeding with or without abdominal pain was the most common presenting symptom. The majority of pregnancies were initially managed conservatively and conservative management was successful in 90% of women with no significant complications. Primary surgical treatment was needed for the remaining patients. The study suggests that intramural pregnancies diagnosed before 12 weeks can be managed with either conservative or surgical treatment, with most women preserving their future reproductive function.
