The study examines the relationship between hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) and HIV infection among 300 pregnant women in a South African hospital. The results suggest that the prevalence of HIV among women with HDP was lower than the historical seroprevalence within the hospital. Women living with HIV who developed HDP had fewer primigravid pregnancies, and HDP developed later in gestation for them. However, there were more significant maternal complications among women living with HIV, such as abruption and elevated liver enzymes. The study concludes that HIV or its treatment may have a protective effect in the development of HDP, but HDP complications in women living with HIV who receive treatment may be significant.
