The study examines how pre-pregnancy obesity and excessive weight gain affect maternal and infant health outcomes, using data from South Carolina birth certificates (2004-2019). By controlling for genetic and environmental factors, the study finds that excessive weight gain and obesity both increase the likelihood of high birth weight infants, cesarean sections, and induced labor. Additionally, excessive weight gain and inadequate weight gain increase NICU admissions among Medicaid mothers.
