Impact of Well-Being Comparisons on Depression, PTSD, and Self-Esteem

This study explores how congruence and incongruence between aversive and appetitive well-being comparisons impact depression, PTSD symptoms, and self-esteem. Using data from 921 participants across three months, response surface analysis revealed that congruent high levels of aversive and appetitive comparisons predicted worse mental health outcomes, including more depressive/PTSD symptoms and lower self-esteem. Additionally, a predominance of aversive comparisons over appetitive ones was linked to heightened depressive symptoms and lower self-esteem. These findings underscore the critical role of aversive comparisons in mental health, aligning with comparison theory.
